Peter's models

Win!

These lovely  models are a joy. They are the excellent work of Boom listener Peter Kunkel, who's been telling us more about his life and hobby - and producing some for us to give away!

"I was born in 1960 and brought up in Pocklington East Yorkshire where I still live.

I had a fantastic childhood but would have loved to have experienced the Swinging ‘60s as a teenager!

After leaving school during the mid ‘70s, I became a motor mechanic for nearly 10 years. I think this job gave me the practical side useful for my modelling hobby later in life.

After redundancy in 1984, I decided I needed a career with a good secure future - so I took a bold step and joined the prison service a year later.  After completing 36 years at HMP Norwich and Full Sutton, I fully retired aged 61.

I've always loved the ‘60s and ‘70s eras, especially the music and vehicles - which has led me to start this fascination of replicating period models!

Originally, I collected Corgi and Dinky models but, after partial retirement in 2016, I decided to give restoration a try; so from a tentative start it's certainly gone from strength to strength. I started to do more complex modelling and custom work leading to commissions from my Facebook posts such as people requesting me to replicate commercial vehicles that they knew, drove or owned.

It's such a wonderful fulfilling but sometimes frustrating hobby that I can safely say I never get bored. I always have my little battery DAB radio on when I'm working so thankfully, in September 2022, I found Boom Radio which has ticked every box in regard to my music taste.

One of my inspirations when creating my models is attractive colour combinations so the Boom turquoise and logo appealed to me. Hence, I just had to replicate Boom on a model which has turned out to be three different vehicles.

When the photos of my creations on were on Boom Facebook, the response was incredible and lovely from so many of the Boom Radio world and other model-based Facebook groups."
