The Kinks and Me
60 years ago this month, The Kinks burst onto the UK music scene with their first Number One- You Really Got Me.
Hailing from North London, The Kinks were formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. Originally known as The Ravens, they pounded out R&B and rock 'n' roll with their friend Peter Quaife on bass. When record producer Shel Talmy heard an early demo recording in '64, he helped the band land a contract with Pye Records - as the group replaced their drummer with Mick Avory and renamed themselves The Kinks.
Ray Davies then went on to write and perform some of the most memorable pop songs ever recorded.
Commentator Richard Littlejohn has found his life intertwined with the Kinks over the last six decades, and he's compiled a special selection of their finest songs in a fascinating history of the group that made so many headlines for so many reasons. From BBC bans to brotherly fall-outs and smashed up hotel rooms - but mostly because of tracks which will forever be remembered.
Enjoy a very personal appreciation in The Kinks And Me, an hour devoted to their work - presented by Richard Littlejohn, on Wednesday 11th September at 9pm on Boom Radio.
