Legacy Tracks

A piece of music is an impressive legacy. The finest melodies will be hummed and played for generations to come and the most memorable lyrics sung forever.

Graham Dene has been highlighting some of the finest Legacy Tracks on his breakfast show to salute the endeavours of those who have already left us an unforgettable musical contribution.

Who will ever forget The Beach Boys' Good Vibrations - but would that track have been quite the same without the distinctive eerie wailing of the instrument we now know was an electro-theremin. It was played by Paul Tanner (1917 - 2013), a former trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, who'd developed it.

No-one will forget Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, but that song would simply not have been the same without the legacy of Raphael Ravenscroft (1954 - 2014). It was Raph who played the sax riff which kicked off that remarkable hit.

Bridge Over Troubled Water will be enjoyed forever - but would that song have endured quite so well without the gospel feel shaped by Los Angeles 'Wrecking Crew' pianist Larry Knechtel (1940 - 2009)?
